Full-Time vs Part-Time

Students in the full-time program take 12-13 units each semester. Students in the part-time program take 6-7 units per semester. The two bootcamps in the program each are taught full-time even for part-time students, as they are intensive two week courses. Students who work while completing the program will need to ask for time off even if they complete the bootcamps online. Each unit of a semester length course translates to about 4 hours of expected coursework a week, though this will vary student by student. When filling out the MSSE application, students will be asked which courseload they intend on taking.

Course Modalities

Instructor’s individual teaching methods vary, but most courses have a mix of synchronous and asynchronous elements. Courses are typically taught during the evening in Pacific time. Synchronous labs or lectures are typically recorded for students unable to attend course times, but always check with the instructors of the course. Up-to-date instructor information for upcoming semesters is available on the berkeley guide.
